Arthritis and Younger Adults: What You Need to Know

Arthritis and Younger Adults: What You Need to Know

Did you know that arthritis isn’t just a concern for older adults? There are over a hundred different types of arthritis, some of which can affect adults in their 20s or 30s. Unfortunately, this can lead many younger adults to dismiss joint stiffness or discomfort as a temporary concern.

Today, Equilibrium Therapeutics wants to help younger adults understand arthritis and what our integrated team can do to help you move better, feel stronger, and manage your symptoms effectively. Understanding the facts can help you take control of your health early on–and the earlier you begin managing your condition, the better your outcomes will be.

Four Myths About Arthritis Pain in Younger Adults

Myth 1: “Arthritis Is Always Caused by Aging”

Let’s clear this myth up first! Arthritis is actually an umbrella term for inflammation in one or more joints. While osteoarthritis (the most common type of arthritis) typically affects older people, it’s not the only type.  Many younger adults develop arthritis for reasons unrelated to age, including:

  • Previous joint injuries that alter alignment or cartilage health
  • Autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis
  • Genetic predispositions
  • Repetitive strain from sports or work activities

If your joint pain is accompanied by the following symptoms, it’s worth scheduling an appointment with our team to see if it might be arthritis:

  • Morning stiffness that improves with movement
  • Swelling around joints
  • Fatigue or mild fever (common with autoimmune forms)

Myth 2: “As a Young Person, I Can Power Through My Arthritis Symptoms”

Most types of arthritis are chronic conditions, which means you’ll need to manage your symptoms for the rest of your life. Ignoring those symptoms can lead to joint damage over time, which can profoundly impact mobility and quality of life.

At Equilibrium Therapeutics, our multidisciplinary team offers a wide range of options to help you manage arthritis, regardless of the specific type you have.

Myth 3: “Rest Is the Best Way to Reduce Arthritis Pain”

This myth is common across all age groups! Because arthritis can make movement painful, many mistakenly believe that rest is the best way to manage it. However, too much inactivity can actually make symptoms worse. The lack of activity weakens the muscles that support the joints, increasing stiffness and discomfort.

Instead, you should incorporate low-impact, consistent movement, such as walking or cycling, throughout your routine. Our team can help you find the best movement programs for your needs, work with you to ensure proper form, and adjust your program as your strength improves.

Myth 4: “Pain Medication Is the Only Way to Manage Arthritis”

Medication can ease symptoms, but it’s rarely enough on its own. Sustainable relief usually requires combining several therapeutic methods, which is one reason why we offer an integrated approach at Equilibrium Therapeutics. Here’s what our different clinicians can do to help manage your pain:

  • Our acupuncturists use fine needles at precise points to reduce inflammation and influence nerve activity, which helps with pain control.
  • Our massage therapists ease muscle restrictions, boost blood flow, and reduce stress, all of which are essential for pain relief.
  • Our chiropractors work on restoring normal joint mechanics and alignment to reduce strain.
  • Our physiotherapists use manual therapy, stretching, and targeted exercise to restore movement.
  • Our kinesiologists build strength and endurance for long-term stability.

Taking Action Early Makes a Big Difference

Living with arthritis in your 20s or 30s doesn’t mean giving up your favorite activities. Early treatment and coordinated care can prevent long-term complications.

Ultimately, we want to help you stay active and independent, so rather than mask your pain, we work on strengthening and stabilizing the affected joint.
